Denzel is an intelligent and handsome 11 year old boy. He is very active and enjoys riding his bike, playing outside, and playing basketball. Denzel is also currently taking trumpet lessons at school, and enjoys video games. He is a smart boy with a wonderful imagination. He is also quite articulate and enjoys talking openly with others. Denzel is a very polite and charming young man, with a great sense of humor, and is often quite a help to caregivers. He even does his homework without prompting after school! Denzel is happy and has a lot of friends. He thrives with a high level of support, structure, and supervision and will most likely do best in a nurturing two parent family. Adoption subsidy may be available for the most appropriate family. Interested families should contact Erin Dennis, Adoption Caseworker, DHHS, 35 Anthony Ave., Augusta, ME 04333 or call 624-8088.

Correction to the AFFM Discount Card!!

There was a mistake on the discount card listing. Gymboree, the clothing store, in South Portland, is not participating in the discount card program. It is actually Gymboree Play & Music, in South Portland, that is offering a 30% discount with the AFFM discount card.

I apologize for all of the confusion and would like to say thank you to both businesses and all of the families for your patience. For more information about Gymboree Play & Music, call 774-0033.

Just for Girls!

Fiddleheads Center for the Arts, in New Gloucester, is offering a great opportunity for all girls ages 11-16 with a cognitive disability. This modern dance class will consist of an eclectic mix of modern and post modern styles.

The class format will start with a warm up that stresses technique, freedom of movement, and full expression. It will then progress to adagio and end with movement across the floor.

The class gives girls a chance to lean more about modern dance as a method of expression and recreation. But most of all, it's a chance to have FUN!

The class will be $135 each for a class of 8 or more and $149 for a class of 7 or less and T-Rec funds could be used for this.

The class will be Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 PM starting January 23, 2006 and ending May 26, 2006. For more information, or to sign up, contact Mary Jo Marquis, Fiddlehead Center for the Arts, 83 Pineland Dr., New Gloucester, ME or call her at 688-2244.

If you can give your son or daughter only one gift, let it be enthusiasm.

Grandma's Hugs are Made of Love

Everything my grandma does
is something special made with love.
She take time to add the extra touch
that says, "I love you very much."

She fixes hurts with a kiss and smile
and tell good stories grandma-style.
It's warm and cozy on her lap
for secret telling or a nap.

And when I say my prayer at night,
I ask God to bless and hold her tight.
Cause when it comes to giving hugs
my grandma's arms are filled with love!

Training Opportunities

Blending Traditions and Values in Adoptive & Foster Families

Foster and adopted children bring their own cultural heritage to their new families, which can be challenging for everyone. With this training, participants will learn about the pervasiveness of stereotyping in our society and resources that support a culturally relevant approach to parenting children in their care. At the end of this training, participants will gain a greater awareness of how culture affects their values, attitudes and behaviors. Participants will learn how to reorganize their family so that it reflects the uniqueness of each family member while the whole family unit is strengthened.

This free workshop will be held Thursday, December 8, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Presque Isle Inn & Convention Center in Presque Isle. To register, contact the Staff Education and Training Unit at 287-9355 or DHHS.setu@maine.gov.

Family Strengths and Resiliency Workshops

There will be a full day of workshops divided into "Life Happens! Parenting Resilient Kids" in the morning and "Resilient Youth in Our Community" in the afternoon. The first workshop is presented by Chris Trout, President of Strengths in Focus. This is a fun and inspiring workshop that will focus on the capacity to see what's going right and build on it, what helps both kids and parents thrive when the road gets rocky, how to set limits without setting off fireworks, how to find the balance between safety and independence, and how to communicate effectively. The second workshop will consist of a panel of adolescents and young adults who have been able to bounce back from adverse situations in their lives. Prepare to be inspired by this youth panel who are able to openly discuss their success, motivation, and ability to bounce back from stress and diversity.

This free workshop will be held Saturday, December 10, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston.

For more information and registration, call 800-264-9224.

Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities

Dr. Podraza, a psychologist at Maine Rehabilitation Neuropsychology Service, will provide participants with information on what non-verbal learning disability (NVLD) is. NVLD is a developmental disability, which all too often goes undiagnosed. These children and youth are often bright but may have difficulty interacting with peers, acquiring self-help skills, have difficulty adapting to new situations and struggle with motor coordination. The workshop will also include an overview of brain structure and functions, developmental manifestations, assessment and intervention/remedial techniques for both home and the classroom. This workshop will help parents understand why children with NVLD act the way they do as well as the impact that brain trauma can have on a child's behavior and cognitive functioning. There will be lots of opportunities to answer your specific questions!

This free workshop will be held Wednesday, December 14 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the University College Center, 201 Texas Ave., in Bangor.

To register, contact Jeanine Brown at 626-5285 or jeanine.brown@maine.gov.
